In 1997, the Putney Federated Church became the United Church of Putney. As a part of the United Church of Christ, the United Church of Putney is an Open & Affirming congregation welcoming all to join us in worship. Believing in God and striving to follow the example and teachings of Jesus, our mission is to provide children, youth and adults with opportunities for education and spiritual growth.
The Reverend Susan Tarolli was called to this community in 2001 and for the past 6 years has led this congregation through various forms of ministry. We have weekly worship services and a Sunday School program for children ages 5-13. Worship is both innovative and traditional, with an interactive conversation (among the gathered community that averages 30-35) preceding most weekly reflections. We have an engaging intergenerational worship once a month. Some of the programs we have offered through the years include an adult education forum on Faith & Politics, book/Bible discussion groups, partnership with Heifer International, Church World Service outreach, emergency fundraising to assist in Hurricane Katrina Relief efforts, annual Spring & Fall Chowda Fests, Christmas Eve Candlelight Carol Walks and much more.
In recent years, we have undergone some major renovations to our building and grounds. The overgrown backyard was lovingly transformed into a beautiful garden space, which has since hosted a garden concert, poetry readings and worship services. The downstairs education room, dining room, kitchen and parlor were cleaned, repainted, plastered and redecorated. Two new furnaces were installed to be more energy efficient. The front vestibule and two staircases are currently being painted and refinished. In keeping with our Open & Affirming status, we are in the midst of installing a lift from the first floor to the second floor sanctuary.
Established in 1772, the Congregational faith community of Putney originally worshipped further north in town. Following increased industrial and commercial activity at the village center, the third and final move of the church came in 1841 with the construction of the present meetinghouse. In 1867, the vestibule was built and the third floor was added as a classroom space. In 1893 the church was again repaired and remodeled, at which time the present bowed pews replaced the original ones, which had no central aisle, and an organ, carpet and Queen Anne windows were installed. In 1915, electric lights and the present pressed tin ceiling were added. A Henry Erban Tracker organ was donated to the church community to be used as long as the church was in existence. The church became the Putney Federated Church on January 10, 1919, when the Baptists and Methodists joined the Congregationalists, and left their church buildings. In 1938 the sanctuary was remodeled and multiple sash windows were installed. |
