One Great Hour of Sharing      Our Church’s Wider Mission

These two offerings are the best way to keep Disaster Response Ministry functioning and immediate.  OCWM insures that we have staff in place before a disaster happens.  OGHS allows the staff to give immediate aid, usually within 48 hours.  Often it is too late to give once a disaster has occurred.  The money needs to be given ahead of time.  Widely promote these offerings within your congregation.

One-time gifts

If you hear of a disaster and want to give money to help, here is the proper channel:

  • Write your check to your local church and give it in the offering.  Mark the memo “Emergency USA” for domestic emergencies and “International Disaster fund” for international crisis.
  • Have your church treasurer write one check to the Vermont conference with the same wording in the memo.
  • The conference will send the money on to the appropriate national office.

This process allows for accurate accounting in all settings.  Thank you for following this procedure.

Remember that many none church people give through secular organizations.  Only church people give through the church.  Often the church is the first organization helping.  Support your church in every setting, local, association, conference and national.

Material Aid

  • Do not donate items until they have been asked for!
  • Again, it is better to have items before a disaster.  Consider making CWS kits that are stored in a warehouse in Maryland, ready to go as soon as they are requested.
  • Used clothing should never be sent to a disaster area.
  • Check this site to see if certain material aid is needed in specific disaster sites.  At this time, none is needed.
